If you really want a resume that is professional and that will impress employers everywhere, then be sure to avoid making the following mistakes.
One: Simply stating your job history and past responsibilities - You do not want to simply state these things because this will leave the employer trying to figure out exactly what you have to offer them. Your resume has to be used to sell your work experience and accomplishments in a precise and clear way.
Two: Making a resume to me focused - You definitely want to put in your employment history, achievements, skills and other pertinent information, but be careful about how you state it. Do not use the words "I" or "my" in your resume because that is not going to impress any employer.
Three: Stating what you want and not conveying what you can provide them - The employer needs to know what you want, but more importantly they have to know what you can offer them. This is the information they are looking for when trying to decide if they should give you an interview, so always be sure you give it to them first.
Four: Leaving out personal information - This is a huge mistake that too many people make as they write a resume. Do not make this mistake because you are responsible for making sure the employer learns every important thing about you.
No one else will do this for you, so you have to, especially if you really want to get an interview for any job.
Five: Using the incorrect format - There are really only three formats that can be used for any resume, the chronological, functional and combination formats. The mistake that people make is not taking time to learn what format each employer prefers.
Providing them with the right format will make it easy for them to read and easy for them to learn the vital information about you. Plus, using the correct format will tell the employer that you took time writing the resume and you did not just throw it together in a hurry.
If you can avoid making these mistakes then you will write a professional resume with no problems. Use a resume sample, example or a template to help make the writing process easier on you and so you can be confident that none of these mistakes will be done in your own resume.
